Is Mixing Homemade and Commercial Dog Food a Safe Long-Term Option?

I’m a dog care blogger at The Paws Journal and love writing about breeds like Golden Retrievers, Chihuahuas, and mixed pups.

Hi everyone!

I’ve been reading a lot about balanced nutrition for dogs, and I wanted to ask —

Is it okay to mix homemade meals with ****-quality commercial dog food in the long run?

I know that some owners prefer to go all-in on raw or home-cooked diets, while others opt for kibble or wet food for convenience. But what about combining both regularly? For example:

  • Feeding cooked chicken, rice, or veggies alongside kibble
  • Alternating between home-cooked meals and store-bought dog food
  • Adding bone broth or fresh toppers to dry food

Are there any nutritional risks or digestive issues that come from this mix?

Would love to hear what others are doing — especially if you’ve spoken to a vet or canine nutritionist.

I recently wrote about transitioning diets and food combinations for sensitive breeds on my blog (The Paws Journal), but I’m curious to know what real dog parents have experienced.

I really appreciate any help you can provide.
